Green Light for Swanage Green Seafront Scheme

Green Light for Swanage Green Seafront Scheme

The Swanage Green Seafront planning applications have been approved by Dorset Council’s Eastern Area Planning Committee.

Swanage Town Council submitted planning applications for the Green Seafront Stabilisation and Enhancement Scheme to Dorset Council in its role as Local Planning Authority. The applications were for both the New Option and the Essential Option, which were presented to the public during engagement activities held in summer 2025.

The decision marks a significant milestone for the project, which aims to create a more stable and resilient seafront in Swanage, while providing improved amenity space for current and future generations.

Following the meeting of the planning committee, Swanage Town Mayor, Councillor Chris Tomes, said “Obtaining planning permission is an important step forward for the project and I would like to thank all residents who have attended meetings and provided comments on the proposals over the last three years as these have helped to shape the approved plans.”

Next steps

Following planning approval, Swanage Town Council can now continue progressing the New Option, which was identified as its preferred scheme because of the wide range of economic, environmental and community benefits it will deliver, including a larger events space, improved accessibility and biodiversity

Planning approval allows the project team to move forward to the next stage of development. The focus will now be on:

  • Discharging planning conditions attached to the consent
  • Finalising technical designs and specifications
  • Securing any remaining permits and approvals
  • Completing procurement processes and appointing contractors
  • Developing detailed construction programmes and phasing plans

During this phase, the project team will continue to work with local stakeholders and will provide further updates as key milestones are reached.

Meanwhile, on-site monitoring will continue to measure ground movement and gather information to inform the detailed design of the scheme.

Project timeline

The granting of planning permission does not mean construction will begin immediately.

Further design, technical and procurement work is required before works can commence on site. Once these processes have been completed, a detailed construction programme and timetable will be shared with the community. Construction is currently expected to begin in autumn 2027.

Residents, businesses and visitors will be kept informed throughout the next stages of the project, with updates published on the Green Seafront project website and through Dorset Council and Swanage Town Council communication channels.
