Herston Communtiy Field

Herston Community Field is a valued open space located in the Herston area of Swanage. Formerly part of the grounds of the old St Mark’s Primary School, the field has long served as an informal recreational area for local residents.

Recognising its importance to the community, Swanage Town Council included Herston Community Field in its Greenspace Strategy, which outlines a long-term vision for the protection, enhancement, and sustainable management of the town’s green spaces. The strategy highlights the field’s role in supporting health and wellbeing, biodiversity, and community cohesion.

Following a successful local campaign, the field was designated as a village green, ensuring its protection from development and securing its future as a publicly accessible space. The site is now managed in collaboration with local partners, including Sustainable Swanage and the Herston Village Hall Committee, with a focus on improving habitat value, encouraging wildlife, and maintaining its use for informal recreation.

Future plans, as outlined in the Greenspace Strategy, include enhancing the field’s ecological features, improving access, and supporting community-led activities that promote environmental awareness and wellbeing.
