Located just off Prospect Crescent in Swanage, the Prospect Green Pocket Park, also known as the Greengage Community Garden, is a welcoming green space dedicated to community gardening, well-being, and sustainability. Since its establishment in 2021, the garden has become a vibrant hub for local residents of all ages and abilities to connect with nature and each other.
From Council Nursery to Community Oasis
The site was formerly used by Swanage Town Council as a nursery for its parks and gardens service, producing bedding plants for displays around the town. With support from local volunteers and community organisations, the space was transformed into the Greengage Community Garden in 2021.
This transformation marked a new chapter for the site: from a functional council facility to a welcoming, inclusive garden designed to benefit the wider community.
Features and Facilities
Greengage is more than just a garden, it is a thoughtfully designed space that promotes both biodiversity and accessibility:
- Greenhouse: A large greenhouse enables year-round growing and propagation of plants.
- Raised Beds: These make gardening more accessible, particularly for those with mobility challenges.
- Cold Frames: Provide a low-cost way to extend the growing season.
- Wheelchair-Accessible Paths: Wide, level pathways allow all members of the community to navigate the garden comfortably.
- Activity Benches: Dedicated workstations for sowing, potting, and crafts encourage creativity and skill-sharing.
All gardening is carried out using wildlife-friendly and chemical-free practices, avoiding herbicides and pesticides to support local biodiversity.
The garden operates on a drop-in basis during open hours, welcoming anyone who wishes to get involved - whether to garden, chat, or simply enjoy the peaceful environment.
The Greengage Community Garden is also committed to local food security. A portion of the fresh produce grown is shared among volunteers and also donated to community initiatives.
