Beach Hut Bookings - Frequently asked questions

What are the charges?

The charges for 2019 will remain at 2018 prices. You may find the charges here:

How much do I have to pay when I make the booking?

To confirm your booking you will be required to pay either the full amount or 20% of the booking cost at the time of booking. This must be by card over the phone or through our online booking system. Your booking will not be accepted unless a minimum of 20% is paid.

Please note that the 20% is a non-refundable deposit – if you decide that you no longer want the beach hut or you decide to cancel for any reason the deposit will not be returned.

Full payment is required by 31st January 2019. If this is not received we will assume that the beach hut is no longer required and release it. The deposit will not be returned.

Do I need to register online before the booking opens?

You may register on our new booking system now, if you haven’t already. If you register before the bookings open this will save you time when you come to make your booking. If you haven’t registered before you make you booking, this will take you a minute or two to enter your name and address. You can register now.

Why do we have to pay a 20% non-refundable deposit?

During our previous lottery booking approach we found that quite a large number of applicants would book beach huts and then cancel them. This not only creates a lot of work for us but is unfair on those people who would genuinely like to book the beach hut they have requested. The payment of the 20% non-refundable deposit is designed to reduce the amount of cancellations we receive.

I want to book 4 weeks in total but not continuously?

The booking periods mentioned above are for continuous hire of a beach hut. Therefore, if you wish to book two weeks in July and a further two weeks in September this counts as two bookings of two weeks and not a single booking of four weeks.

Why have we changed the booking system?

The previous lottery system has been in place for some time and worked reasonably well until recently. However, we now have 93 beach huts and in the last two years have undertaken a successful marketing campaign. This marketing led to a significant increase in bookings of some 25% over the last two years. The large number of applications we received for the lottery last year was difficult to manage and led to a lot of concerns from disappointed customers regarding their expectations of receiving a beach hut. The new approach is designed to be more transparent. Additionally, we have moved the booking period to October as we are aware that many customers like to book their holiday around the beach huts so they are keen to have a fixed date early on.

Why is this a trial?

We appreciate that the new booking system is very different to the previous one and that the new approach may require some additional changes in order to ensure the best customer experience possible. We will be undertaking a survey during 2019 to assess customer experiences and Swanage Town Council will review the booking approach at this time.

What is the best technique to obtain a beach hut for 2019-2020?

Swanage Carnival Week and the following week (27th July to 9th August 2019) are our two most popular weeks by far. We recommend that you avoid booking these if possible.

Online booking is the quickest and most effective. By registering beforehand, which can be done now, you will save time when you complete your booking.

I do not have access to a computer?

We will not be taking paper application forms for beach hut bookings. If you do not have access to a computer we recommend that you speak to a family member or friend who may be able to do an online booking for you. You can still make bookings over the phone.

If I don’t get the beach hut I want can you add me to a waiting list in case someone cancels their booking?

Unfortunately, we will not be maintaining a waiting list. We suggest that you keep an eye on our online diary to see if any beach huts become available. It is very rare that beach huts are cancelled for our busiest times.

I would like to book a period of less than a week?

Bookings of less than 7 days will only be taken from 30th March 2019. Please see our website regarding criteria for daily bookings in advance or contact the Swanage Information Centre.

I would like to change or amend the beach hut that I have already booked?

Any change to a beach hut booking will incur an administration charge of £20 or 15% of the total booking fee, whichever is the greater. Changes to beach huts will not be accepted until 6th November 2018.

I would like to cancel my beach hut?

If you wish to cancel your beach hut you may do so at any time. However as per our terms and conditions for bookings we will retain the 20% non-refundable deposit. If you cancel within one month of the booking start date no refund is possible.

What if I book a beach hut after 31st January 2019?

You may book your beach hut anytime during the year, subject to availability, however after 31st January 2019 we will not be offering the 20% deposit and will ask that full payment is made for beach huts at the time of booking.
